Amber

Amber, often referred to as ambergris or amber oil, is a highly valued substance in both perfumery and magical practices.

Ambergris, a solid, flammable, waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, is often called “floating gold.” Usually found floating in the water or washed ashore in tropical countries, it’s highly prized by the perfume industry for producing expensive perfumes. This waxy, odorous substance is lighter than water and can float in the sea for years, hardening under the influence of salty water and sun. Natural ambergris is formed when sperm whales consume large quantities of cephalopods, such as squid, which have sharp, indigestible beaks. The whale’s digestive system secretes a substance, possibly bile, to protect its intestines from the sharp beaks. Over time, this substance mixes with other gastrointestinal secretions and forms into a solid mass, which the whale eventually regurgitates or excretes. This mass, initially soft and foul-smelling, gradually hardens and takes on a more pleasant odor as it ages and interacts with the sea environment.

In perfumery, both natural ambergris and synthetic amber compounds are used to add depth, warmth, and complexity to fragrances, often serving as base notes. The smell of ambergris is characterized by a unique, invigorating evening musk aroma with oriental notes, making it one of the most highly prized ingredients in perfume creation.
